Is Intermittent Fasting More Effective Than a Calorie Deficit?

Have you heard the claim that intermittent fasting (done correctly) is more effective than a calorie deficit? Intermittent fasting can help you with weight loss, but it's not always a magic bullet, unless you do it right.

When I talk about intermittent fasting, what I like to talk about is the window of time that you're fasting, and that's not how many hours you're fasting for, that's if you're fasting with the sun and not the moon. A lot of people like to fast during the day because it's easier to distract themselves, so if they're hungry, they can kind of push through it. Really what you want to make sure that you're doing is eating when you need energy. So you want to eat earlier and finish eating earlier, which means that you'll say no to drinking and eating in front of your TV.

Intermittent fasting can help you to create a calorie deficit because you're probably not going to be eating additional calories on top of the calories that you need throughout the day. However, it's not always a magic bullet, because if you get too hungry and you eat too many calories at an inopportune time (like right before sleep), it's going to sit and interrupt your sleep (which is a whole other ballgame!).
