Is Eating Vegan Actually Healthy or Not?

I’ve been hearing about quitting veganism a lot more! I can tell you now, as a registered dietitian, that many of my clients who are vegan aren’t as healthy as those who eat animal proteins! While I think being vegan is an excellent meal plan for some, you must be diligent with the food that you eat. It’s very difficult to get all the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients in when you’re eating fully plant-based, including appropriate amounts of protein. And many vegans that I know are haphazard. They’ll go out to bars with their friends and they’ll eat French fries, pasta, or pizza with no cheese on it. Or, they end up eating ultra-processed foods that are supposed to be like meat and give them protein—but there are so many different ingredients in there that are not as great as meat. I recommend my clients eat 20-30 grams of protein at every meal during the day. Yes, most of the time I recommend animal protein, but if they don’t eat animal protein, we make sure to be diligent about getting that protein in another way. If you are on a plant-based diet, let’s connect to make sure that you are eating the right foods and supplements to fill that gap!
